Assistant Professor

Jon Herbert currently teaches THE 140 (Acting I) and THE 340 (Playwriting). Before coming to WFU, Jon was the head of the theatre program at Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield, MO where he developed and taught all theatre and drama curriculum and served as the director and production manager for all productions, including I and You by Lauren Gunderson, Almost Maine by John Cariani, Schoolhouse Rock Live by George Keating, Scott Ferguson and Kyle Hall, and It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry. Jon also taught at Missouri State University where he directed Baltimore by Kirsten Greenidge and served as a writer/director for the Giving Voice interactive theatre ensemble.

He has over 15 years of experience in new play development and is a fellow of the Mid America Theatre Conference (MATC) where he served the Playwriting Symposium as a playwright, director, actor and co-chair. He is also an active member of the Dramatists Guild.

His acting credits include Mary Zimmerman’s The Odyssey, Lorraine Hansberry’s Raisin in the Sun, and Dominique Morriseau’s Skeleton Crew. He is also a cast member of The Milly Project touring ensemble. 

He has served on the boards of Actors Theatre of Missouri, MOSAIC Arts Collective, and Devising Original Theatre in Springfield (DOTS) and was a resident director for Springfield Contemporary Theatre where he directed Fences by August Wilson, Pass Over by Antoinette Nwandu, and Kill Move Paradise by James Ijames.

Jon studied theatre performance at University of Missouri and stage directing at Western Illinois University. He earned an MA in Theatre from Missouri State University, as well as an MFA in Dramatic Writing.
